The Mary River Turtle has become a popular figure with Australian environmentalists who say the endangered creature is being further threatened by Queensland State Government’s plans to build a dam on the river. It is one of the more unusual species of turtles as it breathes through lung-like structures in its tail and needs shallow water to survive. It was described formally by scientists only in 1994 and little is known about it. The hairsute creature was captured by amateur photographer Chris Van Wyk as it quietly waded in the shallows.

Dragonflies, flies and beetles also take on an unearthly quality as the water droplets form on them.
These remarkable photographs were taken by physiotherapist Miroslaw Swietek at around 3am in the forest next to his home.
Using a torch, the 37-year-old amateur photographer hunts out the motionless bugs in the darkness before setting up his camera and flash just millimetres from them.

Mr Swietek said: ‘I took up photography as a relaxing hobby two and a half years ago and I particularly like taking pictures of insects and lizards.
‘I photograph them in their natural environment in the forest next to my village.

‘They all are covered in dew because I go to the forest in the morning at around 3am.
‘At 3am to 4am insects are sleepy and taking photos of them is easy, but it is very difficult to find them.

‘You must be very fast taking the photos because the dew quickly disappears.
‘It is very satisfying getting a good shot of an insect which I have had to hunt out.
‘I have books which help my identify insects but because they are all covered in dew I find it almost impossible to know which types they are.’
Although insects do not ’sleep’ in the same sense as humans, they enter a state of torpor where they are virtually immobile and much less sensitive to external stimuli.
Mr Swietek lives with his wife and teenage son in Jaroszow, a village in Poland around 30 miles from the city of Wroclaw.

But it seems that in Soviet Russia they had already this ideal car - you can see here a luxury Soviet “Pobeda” (”Victory”) car on the high wheels, and people say it is not a self-made thing but was in production in limited edition at the car factory, so it can be probably not only the first Russian SUV but first SUV ever.

The sites featured here don’t necessarily stand out just because of their limited color palette, as they are all expertly designed and laid out in different ways; but I think it’s most certainly a factor in the success of each and every one.

Obviously these sites don’t all stick to just black and white; the Marc Ecko site, for example, uses dashes of yellow to highlight new content, while the Buckenmeyer & Co. site has a pink roundel to highlight the fact that it’s a new site.

Because these dashes of color are used sparingly, they arguably have more impact and draw the eye wherever necessary. Also, since websites typically feature much more color in their designs, the few sites that are largely limited to black and white (or grayscale) have more impact, and are arguably more memorable, for their limited palette.
